

The evidence strongly suggests the word “Meditation” has become so generic that it doesn’t convey a common central theme.

Some of the replies were what you might call “really out there”, and a few of them must have been jokes or came from some folks you’d want to avoid on a full moon. The most common replies consisted of contemplation, mindfulness, concentration, doing nothing, letting-go, praying, and hypnotic suggestions. Perhaps there was a definable consensus that I was missing? So I posed the question “What is Meditation?” across Twitter, G+ and several Facebook communities. I wondered if I could better define meditation if I had a more information from others. The most obvious gap concerns the different opinions of what “meditation” is. By gaps, I mean gaps in our understanding that we just haven’t filled in yet. It is a declaration that you believe in the persistence of memory.Over the years, as I’ve learned more about meditation, I’ve also noticed a growing number of information gaps.

Writing a book is an act of sheer defiance. We are all whispering in a tin can on a string, but we are heard, so we whisper the message into the next tin can and the next string. You know that you are a part of a larger story that has shape and purpose-a tangible, familiar past and a constantly refreshed future. But if something you learn or observe or imagine can be set down and saved, and if you can see your life reflected in previous lives, and can imagine it reflected in subsequent ones, you can begin to discover order and harmony. Everything we experience unfolds without a pattern, and life is just a baffling occurrence, a scattering of notes with no melody. If you gaze into that bleakness even for a moment, the sum of life becomes null and void, because if nothing lasts nothing matters. I fear not just that I, personally, will be forgotten but that we are all doomed to being forgotten that the sum of life is ultimately nothing that we experience joy and disappointment and aches and delights and loss, make our little mark on the world, and then we vanish, and the mark is erased, and it is as if we never existed. “The idea of being forgotten is terrifying. Would you ask them to labor and go hungry while you yourself enjoyed old-fashioned Values? You-you yourself are a child of this mass and a brother to all the rest. At the same time, the pressure of human millions who have discovered what concerted efforts and thoughts can do. Which permitted savagery and barbarism in its own great cities. Which spent military billions against foreign enemies but would not pay for order at home. Owing to the multiplied power of numbers which made the self negligible.
